Museums

It takes 23 buildings to house and support the diverse collections and activities of the Museum of New Mexico. From its modest beginning 86 years ago in the restored Palace of the Governors on the historic Plaza in Santa Fe, the state museum system has secured its place among the nation's best. It offer arts, history, traditions and cultures of the Southwest in authentic settings. In Santa Fe, don't miss the museums of International Folk Art and Indian Arts and Culture, neighbors in a museum complex that also houses the state Laboratory of Anthropology. The private Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is within walking distance. While in Taos, take time to visit the Millicent Rogers Museum, a treasure trove of regional folk art. In Albuquerque, be sure to visit The Museum of Natural History and its spectacular featured displays.

Other museums around the state, including those associated with our universities and community colleges, offer closer looks at the diverse segments of New Mexico's cultural heritage. Two of the best are the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque and the New Mexico State University Museum in Las Cruces.

The Museum of New Mexico also offers New Mexico Cultural Treasures, an excellent website providing a database of Museums, Parks, and Monuments of New Mexico.

At the Bradbury Science Museum you'll find the history of Los Alamos and the research conducted there.

The recently opened Georgia O'Keeffe Museum features the work of the celebrated painter.
